Drawing on a background in horticulture and a life spent with hands in earth, my art practice is a celebration of the beauty of nature, wild and cultivated.
Reminiscent of herbarium and entomology specimens and alluding to objects of study, my paper sculpture works are intended to be observed closely. Through each piece I invite the onlooker to pause, engage the imagination and delve deeper into a personal connection with the natural world. The creative process requires me to do the same. The more my practice develops, the more I find myself marvelling over the smallest details. Walks through the paddock have become a study in plant forms and insects, and the garden provides endless inspiration.
The delicate nature of my work requires a gentle and respectful hand, as does the subject itself, and only through slow and mindful attention to detail can I create. The meticulous process of making, the use of fine paper, and the employment of shadow as a transient feature of the work, further reflect the fragility of the subject. Each piece is intended to revere, not replicate. Nature is the ultimate artist, even the imperfections are beautiful when observed closely and with an open mind.
