A little bit more from Jason: The revving hum of Red Eye Cicadas Psaltoda moerens is a familiar sound on hot summer days, it is the male cicadas mating call to attract a female. After mating, female cicadas lay hundreds of eggs between cracks of bark on Scribbly Gum Eucalyptus haemastoma. A few weeks on, nymphs hatch and drop to the ground, then tunnel into the soil. Here they live for at least a year, feeding on sap from small roots. Mature nymphs crawl from the ground and shed their skins, the delicate brown shells can be seen on tree trunks. Adult cicadas live for only a few raucous weeks, puncturing the smooth bark of Scribbly Gums to drink the sap.
