Artist Statement
The photographs in this series were inspired by the experience of physical isolation during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown – global and local. I was playing with the concept of being inside a virtual, visual dome or bubble, exploring ideas of sight and insight at a time of both intense turbulence and stillness. In this strange twilight zone, I observed the daily rhythms and patterns of light, flight and movement, near and far, from within this bubble, photographing my surrounds.
I explored generators and reflectors of light, energy and sustenance – both external and internal – and concepts of place and space, connection and disconnection, reality and abstraction. I was curious about the idea of examining the world from the backyard, literally and metaphorically; how forced introspection and the reduction of stimulus and visual ‘noise’ could trigger fresh insight (20/20 vision), perception and clarity of focus.
How unexpected confinement, with the external world seemingly in freefall, with rapidly shifting centres of gravity and power, could generate profound insights and re-examination of everything we thought we knew. And how the disruption we are experiencing in 2020 might serve as a catalyst for radically re-envisaging future states.
