Lee Leibrandt

Lee Leibrandt is an early career Australian artist who predominantly weaves small format tapestries. Her work reflects a connection between nature and her experience of place; often informed by travels within Australia – from bushland to the outback – and the mountains and deserts of the US.

Of her art practice, Lee says:

I have always looked to the natural landscape as my muse. This is manifested in my design process – combining the traditional medium of tapestry with modern elements of mixed-media collage and painting. I do not seek to create a true image in woven form. Rather, a more dream-like representation that captures the essence of a place, via an age-old meditative and intentional practice.

Lee’s work has been exhibited in Canberra, Melbourne and Orange. She was a finalist in The Corner Store Gallery 2019 Mini Series Art Prize and 2020 Blacktown City Art Prize. In 2021, Lee was awarded Highly Commendations in both the Irene Davies Emerging Artist Award for Small Tapestries and Gosford Art Prize 2021.

In October 2022, Lee was part of an invitational creative exchange between GOST and the Australian Design Centre, Sydney to showcase new work for Hope, curated by Anne Masters. In November of the same year, Lee was awarded the Workplace Research Associates Award from the Capital Arts Patrons’ Organisation. The award will fund materials for several large tapestries which Lee will weave throughout 2023.
