Jason McDonald

I use a modern blend of photography and digital design for the artworks
I create. This body of work is composed entirely from photographic expeditions during the four seasons at my eco retreat located in rural NSW, Australia.

Jason McDonald’s beloved connection to the land and exquisite eye for detail captures the underlying relationships between plant and insect or animal in this unique ecosystem. He contrasts the fragile and rugged elements of the natural environment to provide the viewer a naturalist perspective of these mostly hidden life cycles.

I want my viewers to enjoy a child like wonder by making their own discovery within the artwork.

Jason McDonald enjoyed a successful career in Sydney as an award-winning graphic designer before returning to the family farm near Mudgee, NSW, Australia where he grew up surrounded by nature. It was here in 2015, Jason established his luxury accommodation - Permanent Camping Eco Retreat - while also following new directions in his creative pursuits.

Jason began a love of photographing birds, insects, flora and fauna and then turning his photography into works of photomedia art. In 2018, Jason featured in his first exhibition in Mudgee and since then has appeared in many group shows in surrounding rural NSW towns including Orange, Bathurst and Lithgow. In
December 2020, he was selected as a finalist in the Adelaide Park Lands Art Prize and to exhibit in Small Works Art Prize in Melbourne, January 2021.

In 2022, he was selected as a finalist in the inaugural Regional Landscape Prize at The Corner Store Gallery. In the same year, he was selected as a finalist in the 2022 Environmental Art & Design Prize. Jason is working towards a collaboration with Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Taronga Zoo and Bibly Blooms for a new group exhibition in 2023.
